Coconut Opener

Coconut is the most common thing noticed on streets of India. Every summer I visited my grandparents place, I used to drink coconut water everyday. Even now when I think of that scorching heat and the humidity levels in the place, one drop of tender coconut water tastes like nectar.

Now, I am again into the habit of drinking coconut water almost everyday. It sure requires skill and practice to cut a coconut.

Once the young coconut has been safely removed from the tree, cutting an end down so it is flat with a knife(called mocchu in kannada), and then sectioning out a center hole works well to access the juice. In young coconuts the juice may actually be under some pressure, and will spray slightly when the inner husk is first penetrated.

You see many young lads doing this in nook and corner of the cities. Well, I happened to visit one of them, and in the process of doing so, this lad had a cut on his hand and it started bleeding, though not serious. Everyone around expressed their share of concern and I soon joined the bandwagon as a responsible citizen of the country. But the lad was smiling away to glory as he caught the attention of the onlookers and felt accomplished in his own sense. After replacing the coconut, he washed his hands in flowing water. Still smiling, he came back and showed similar achievements on both hands. I wish I had carried something in order to recognize his work. All the elderly men and women after duly advising him left the place.

My Industrial Engineering part of the brain became active. So I started to think in the lines of devising a mechanism to cut the coconut in a safe manner. A small, light and compact machine or a tool that can cut the coconut without spilling the water would be perfect for this task. Since I have also had experience in the Computer Industry, I could not stop my brain from thinking about automation. A more perfect tool would involve zero human intervention.
